Innovative, Adaptive & Responsive

• Our Swimming Pool is all Natural without the use of chemicals
• Natural cleaning products are used only on our property & guest rooms
• Natural and locally produced soaps  in our guest rooms
• Natural laundry soaps to wash all linens
• Pure Mountain water only for drinking & showering
• Ant moats around our building to stop ants entering the buildings and night lights over fish pond to attract seasonal flying insects
• Energy consumption through mains power is limited to a max of 12,000 wt at any time for our entire property including our family area (this is less  than the consumption of normal house hold in developed countries)
• We encourage guests to turn off their lights when not in use
• Energy saving LED light bulbs are used only throughout our property
• Front load washing machine (water saving)
• Natural sunlight for drying clothes and gas dryer when sunlight is limited for drying clothes & bedding
• Change of towels only when guests request or every 3rd day
• Sky lights & glass tiles for natural light
• Natural gas for cooking & heating water
• Rechargeable torches in our rooms
• No red meat on our menu (beef production has a huge carbon and water footprint)
• low flow shower roses in guest showers
• No baths to conserve water
• Vetiver grass hedges and extensive rafus palm platings to stop erosion on sloping areas
• Swales to stop soil and water loss on property
• We mulch the garden to protect the soil from erosion, to control weeds and minimize watering
• Extensive drainage systems to reduce soil erosion & Pintos peanut planting to fix Nitrogen in the soil
• Vegetables, spices, fruits & herbs are sourced from our Organic gardens
• Organic fertilizers: seaweed concentrate and local cow manure
• Over 150 edible and medicinal plants in the garden

Robust Circulatory Flow

• No plastic straws are used in our restaurant
• Recycled kitchen oil is used for candles at dinner time
• Edible kitchen food is feed to our rescued monkeys daily
• Sewage  & wastewater is treated through vegetated leachfields
• Glass, plastic bottles & cardboard are recycled at the refuse depot
• We compost all organic wastes & paper (non glossy) onsite for our gardens
• No burning rubbish policy (this is a local way to dispose of  rubbish)
• Sponsored monthly rubbish truck - Picks up rubbish in our village &  takes it to the refuse centre (a joint project instigated by the lodge & now shared with a neighbouring hotel)
• Flower arrangements for rooms & our restaurant are harvested  from our Permaculture gardens only
• Housing was designed following the natural lay of land
• Local timbers  & materials harvested from our property or the surrounds (where possible) for furniture and buildings - bamboo, coffee, coconut & jackfruit timber.
• Locally made terracotta natural floor tiles
• Bamboo is grown on site for construction purposes
• Local coconut oil for cooking & salad dressing
• Organic coffee is grown in our sons garden nearby to supply our guests & staff
• Herbs & spices come from our organic gardens to make fresh meals, teas & sauces
• Locally grown palm sugar, cacao, vanilla & coconuts
• Limited imported products  - we  limit our imported products ( from outside Indonesia) 
• Seedlings were grown on site in our seed area
• We support local plantings often not seen in the local markets now
• We plant local flowers and trees annually on our property

Honouring Community & Place

• Traditional Balinese designs are featured in our buildings
• Balinese traditional dishes are featured on our menu
• Guest activities employ locals only - for low impact activities : Trekking, walks, mountain biking, massage & workshops
• Only local villagers are employed
• Local villagers are trained onsite where Hotel skills are not available
• We offer local trainees to gain experience in the Hotel industry by joining our staff for 3 months for onsite work experience.
• Local village men & women are trained to be trekking guides, masseuses, chefs, gardeners and other.
• We employ teachers to teach Weekly Dance Class for children aged 5 – 12 Yrs
• We support the local area by giving a donation from our trekking income to improve and develop the rainforest treks
• We sponsor bi-weekly football training for children aged 5-12 also tournaments & uniforms
• We sponsor our local children's English class  (seasonally)
• We sponsor a weekly futsal for young adults - court hire, tournaments & uniforms
• We employ only local craftsmen to make alterations &  renovations at our lodge.

Conservation & Wildlife

• Continuous planting to encourage local bird & butterfly population
• Edible landscape and Permaculture principles are applied on our property
• Candles with reused cooking oil (no tea lights - we love orangutans!)
• No palm oil is used for cooking and meals
• Protection of natural areas including the riparian zone
• NO TAKE zone in the surrounding rainforest Seacology project
• NO catching bird zone in the surrounding community
• Tree planting scheme with guest carbon offset
• Monkey rescue: providing safe healthy home for 3 monkeys that can't be rehabilitated back into the wild
• Captive wildlife releases - pangolins, native spotted cat, reticulated pythons, native birds
• Over 20 years encouraging wildlife preservation in the local community
• Bali starling breeding project (working with Begawan foundation)
• Regular donations to Friends of the National Parks & New cage for confiscated baby Gibbons
